Candidates for Etsy-like Marketplace:

February 02, 2014

Sitemile products are no longer being recommended due to business practices, unreliable and untested script updates.

Sitemile / WPMU MarketPress

April 21, 2013 by Ron Dorsey MarketPress Pros:

  1. Utilizes WordPress multi-site that give complete virtual shops
  2. Timely friendly responses to support request
  3. GridMarket, a responsive child theme, provides quite a few theme options for the seller to adjust
  4. Low entry cost - $19.00 plus monthly membership fees.

MarketPress Cons:

  1. Needs better documentation in setting up an Etsy site. Visit discussion at WordPress.org
  2. No list of suggested and compatible plugins
  3. Login - registration - my account and shopping cart within the header are not integrated into the theme
  4. Has only one child theme
  5. No mention on how best to restrict the seller from the Dashboard/Admin area and which plugin Admin control plugin has been tested for MU use. For example, generally you would want your site visitor to be able to access their shopping cart on any page

Even a seasoned WordPress site developer would have questions on how to implement an Etsy like shop when you have to consider all or the other components needed on a multi-site install. Add to this that there exist plugins conflicts, plugins that may or may not work on a multi-site install and you have your MarketPress site developer literally experimenting. The guides should list needed/tested plugins required to make the site: secure, SEO ready, membership ready, social net ready and that do not conflict with MarketPress themes/templates nor which do not conflict with each other. Until this is available, MarketPress is providing only a part of the solution. Unfortunately I did not see step-by-step guides in creating the environment. You must ask "how to" on the community forums.

The idea of having a MU environment plays nicely into creating separate shops venues utilizing a virtual WordPress install for each shop. With the MU setup there are many questions with respect in providing both global functions as plugins and local only functions. Unfortunately I've not been able to find where MarketPress provides a solution. Example: there are SEO plugins which do not do well or work at all in a MU install. If you were a first time WordPress MU site developer you would be lost for a SEO which works with MarketPress in particular. You would need to generate a help ticket to try to find a SEO solution. On a single WordPress install or non- MU, you would continue to use your current SEO plugin, however MarketPress needs to help validate which plugins work or do not work with the MarketPress Theme. Child Themes: There exist only one child theme, GridMarket. When you think that each shop has the ability to look completely different from one another, it would be great to have more child themes to offer the shop owners. GridMarket lacks some basic functions - there is no integration of log in/out - register - my account nor is there a shopping cart. Summary: This is a summary to date not at all complete - last updated: April 21, 2013 No one is asking for a turn-key solution, as a site developer we need to know what works best while using MarketPress. What has been tested good and compatible. There is also a need to restrict shop owner to their dashboard, again, which plugin work best while using MarketPress on a MU install? Whats needed:

  • Better documentation is setting up an Etsy site
  • A list of suggested and compatible plugins
  • Integration of login - registration - my account and shopping cart within the header area
  • More variety of child themes
  • Admin control plugin for MU

----------

Bottom line: MarketPress does not bring to the developer enough detail in its documentation, guides or videos in order for the web site developer to make good sound decisions. If you are marketing the script as an Etsy clone or Etsy like, you need to know about the Etsy foundation and in particular, with respect to achieving this on a WP MU setup. I found that MarketPress staff member who responds to help request seem not to understand the workings of Etsy - only the basics, which is not enough. MarketPress lacks giving the guidance on the following.

  1. Security
  2. Limiting backend admin access for the client and each seller
  3. Providing a basic understanding of the Etsy like environment so that the site developer can be confident in making choices
  4. MU layer brings in more questions of plugins compatibility for SEO, stats and others
  5. Providing a suggested list of beneficial complimentary plugins
  6. With only one child theme, you will have to code your own or have someone code for you. Which then needs to be added to the cost of MarketPress use.

January 08, 2014 - Version 1.131 by Ron Dorsey

There has been seemingly few fixes and improvements for Walleto since September 1, 2013. It is impractical to depend on timely fixes so that your client may operate their shop with transactions that will not break. From what I gathered over the months and reading the discussion boards, the coder has just over extended himself with too many products and falls short of delivering. Many of the updates have not been tested but never-the-less released.

In the coming months, I will be looking at other solutions within WordPress.

Good news - it has been 2 versions now and Walleto has much improved. The improvement rating for support is still out. Quality support and good documentation are vital - this can not be more emphasized when talking e-commerce and especially for multi-vendor application.

Whats new? The question is what is working and where is the documentation.

Lack of Documentation: There is absolutely no documentation/no instructions - not even the most basic. The entire operation of learning is from posting on the forum, and then hope for a timely response.

Product: This script, as stated in earlier reviews, will not work and is not to be used for an online store. The coder is charging for beta versions of Walleto which discredits the company.

Product Potential: This is an attractive way for the seller because products can be entered through the frontend (simple and clean entry form) or in the sellers admin area. You can restrict access to the WordPress admin and have them stay in the frontend. After a seller or vendor signs in, they will see a menu of items in which to add/edit/delete products, add images to products and view other stats (will provide that later).

Sitemile's Review Update on Walleto Theme

I've cut short the review when I discovered major failures in support and in product development. Unfortunately the Walleto Theme product has several severe issues, they are:

  • No documentation
  • Some basic and needed features do not exist
  • Several needed functions that are available do not work
  • Good questions may not receive a response
  • State of readiness for Walleto Theme at this time is beta and is not for commercial use
  • At least 3 customers/WordPress site developers, who have purchased the Walleto Theme have asked for a money return at the forum however - no response has been provided for over a week

For the reasons above, I do not recommend purchasing Walleto theme. This is quite unfortunate as the foundation is well constructed. You will most likely get 2 black eyes from a client if you are depending on Sitemile. If possible, I would like to revisit the Sitemile site later this year and report back any improvements.

Walleto Theme presents shopping for multi-sellers without the use of setting up WordPress MU.

From the manufacturer:

With our marketplace theme, your users can create their own shop, and start selling their own products. Walleto comes packed with a user account area, where your customers can track their orders, keep their products updated, add portfolio shop pictures, control finances, basically anything a modern ecommerce or marketplace website has.

Comment:

SiteMile utilizes - Product Custom Post Type which allows the seller to enter products and product categories all from the front end,.

Although the Walleto project has not been thoroughly tested for commercial use, it is coming along quite nicely. Also the support has stepped up in providing timely responses. I will continue to report back on support quality.

I would like to bring attention to the following which I know will be resolved:

  1. Page Layout - Even though you set the front page to full width, the page still continues to display partial width with a 3/4 by 1/4 column. Unfortunately this page is set to full width but as you can see it does not have full page width.

On the surface, this plugin looks like it the Etsy prize winner - but hold on. Walleto Theme provides frontend entry of products for each seller.

I will be walking you though at a Talking Manuals dev site utilizing Walleto Theme.
