Summary:: Four reasons to stay clear from Ether Content Builder plugin

  • It is not SEO friendly - this can be tested out using WordPress SEO by Joost. If you were to add a focus word or phrase within the content of any of the Ether Blocks on the page, WordPress SEO could not find it therefore you will see a red check mark. Try it.
  • Forum questions by paying users, usually goes unanswered. Check how many post has "1" by it and for how long - see forum.
  • Earlier versions of Ether Content Builder could have altered the database in such a way that you have to start with a new database if you wanted to continue using Ether. The uninstall and delete files still left artifacts of Ether in your WordPress database
  • Web URLs do not become auto hyperlinked even though you have the hyperlink URLs plugin installed - example the following URL is not clickable: http://talkingmanuals.com

Ether Content Builder - Plugin Conflicts and possible database conflict

June 12, 2013

I have found out that Ether Content Builder has a database entry which is not being deleted when you have deactivated then uninstalled the plugin. This entry also may stop version 1.74 from being upgraded to 1.75. If this were fixed perhaps ECB would work better. The plugin, "Garbage Collector" does not currently detect the stray ECB database artifact entry. For this reason I suggest not installing this plugin.

An indication that the plugin is failing is that when you click on a check box to select all or the entire group of plugins, the check box has not effect. Also the left admin menu, on mouse over, these items will not expand.

It is with regret that upon review of Ether Content Builder over the years that I am no longer recommending its use. Here is why:

  1. It can be highly disruptive as it may conflict with many plugins
  2. It is a question which SEO will work within its construct - the author never replies to this question
  3. As a premium plugin, the support is inadequate with many request unanswered
  4. Auto hyperlinking has been permanently disabled

I will be looking for an alternative page layout plugin.

Website / Forum (developer's forum) / Purchase /SEO Yoast fails with Ether Content

Version 1.7.4 on framework version 1.7.0

Although an improvement, Ether Content Builder continues:

  1. URLs are non clickable. The following URL is not active - http://talkingmanuals.com
  2. Ether Content Builder may or may not want to update passed version 1.7.4
  3. Conflicts with the WordPress administration back end and plugin
    1. The plugin, WP-Invoice v 2.10 is impacted. Ether Content hides totals, prevents editing the invoice title
    2. "Select All" button for plugins no longer works
  4. Conflicts with CollabPress project management plugin

Ether Content Builder

Unfortunately I am not recommending the use of Ether Content Builder for several reasons:

  • There exist little if any support at the forum
  • There are conflicts with key plugins, one being the TynMCE editor (resolved with version 1.7.5)
  • If you rename your "wp-content" folder, Ether Content Builder may act up

Ether Content Builder 1.5.1 / 1.5.2 / 1.7.x (ECB)

Ether Content Builder unfortunately disables auto hyperlinks for URLs. This has been a known issue with Talking Manuals product review staff for several versions of ECB.

example:

This plugin has been devalued because of the lack of technical assistance and timely responses on the ECB support forum.

  • Conflicts: ECB still conflicts with the TinyMce text editor in that it may not allow TinyMce to save
  • Disables URL hyperlinks
  • Lacks technical support and timely responses to help request at the ECB support forum. You would not think this of a premium plugin.

Ether Content Builder 1.5.1 / 1.5.2 / 1.7.x (ECB) Warning

ECB hardcodes to the “wp-content” folder which is unfortunately bad policy. When you want to help safeguard your WordPress install, it is recommended you change the name of the “wp-content” folder. Ether Content Builder breaks if this folder is changed. This plugin will work but may conflict with other plugins or may not install if the custom wp-content folder is renamed prior to installing.

I am in the process of reviewing Page Builder

I've been looking for a replacement for Ether Content Builder and finally found it, Page Builder.

  • Timely support responses from the author
  • Drag-n-drop interface to construct columns and to ad modules
  • Widgets can be placed anywhere on the page body
  • Free

SEO Yoast Fails with Ether Content

May 14, 2013

Question: Is it not good policy to apply the_content filter on post content before extracting data? Yoast SEO (WordPress SEO) does not apply the_content filter on post content before extracting data such as meta tags. This causes problems with other plugins that follow this practice. Why is Yoast the exception? Is this an oversight?

Yoast SEO seems to have it all: great docs, interface, great help guides, easy to understand on "how to," however it misses out on a key function.

Not applying the_content filter on post content before extracting data such as meta tags is a major failure in a key process. Many individuals are not even aware of this failure of Yoast and therefore its impact.

Happy to report the new WordPress update, 3.5 has seem to fix the key conflicts of Ether Content Builder

December 10, 2012

Update: Unfortunately Ether Content Builder conflicts with many key WordPress plugins on the several model sites for testing plugins. From our test, we suggest you not use Ether Content Builder until these matters are fixed.

However if your site has been using Ether Content Builder, then there are some workarounds until things get fixed.

Problem: Page content is not being saved, including page titles.

Workaround: Deactivate ECB, reload the page in question, re-enter the content, then save that page, then re-activate ECB.

See conflict list (search on: "ether") The developer has not responded to the conflict list now over 3 months old.
